The Final Fantasy series is one of the longest-running series in video game history. Final Fantasy III was originally released in Japan in 1990 but didn't see a worldwide release until it was remade in 2006. The newer Nintendo DS version was positively received with more than 2million copies sold worldwide. The original version, based on NES sold 1.4million copies.

Players take possession of an airship in the game. That airship's name is Enterprise, with Final Fantasy IV repeating this choice. The game's plot focuses on the history of a floating continent that has fallen into ruin, hovering high above an unnamed planet. Four orphans are tasked with locating an ancient crystal in the game.

After the use of the Enterprise in Final Fantasy III and IV, there are other Trek references dotted throughout the rest of the series. Final Fantasy IX features an NPC who, when asked about whether his potions are effective or not, replies 'Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a miracle-worker! Ask someone else.'

In Final Fantasy XIV, there is a shipwrecked vessel named the Kobayashi Maru as well.
