10 Times Video Game Publishers Insulted Their Fans
7. Train Simulator's $2,000 DLC Price Tag
Back in 2015, Kotaku reported that it'd cost locomotive lovers in excess of $2,000 to purchase all of the add-on content for Dovetail Games' Train Simulator - not exactly a bargain basement deal - but in the five years since, that number has blown up to an eye-watering $6,500.
And what do you get for dropping all that green? A solid gold, gem-encrusted luxury carriage, perhaps? Not a chance. Additional track types, trains and other 'goodies' are yours to own, depending on how much you're willing to splurge.
Publishers are, of course, free to charge whatever they please for their own content, but that doesn't make the extreme attempt at monetization any less audacious. Remember, this isn't a free-to-play title, would it really have hurt Dovetail's bottom line to include some of the 423 (and counting) content packs as part of the RRP?
Lucky for us, frequent Steam sales slash the asking price by a large margin, but either way, collection-minded players will still feel the squeeze, should they choose to buy everything.
