Now for another entry in the Metal Gear series, specifically the first chronologically. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Naked Snake finds himself trading blows with Revolver Ocelot, a Spetsnaz officer with a penchant for gun juggling.

Cocky and headstrong, the Russian commando is no match for our protagonist and the villain starts to form a grudge. After losing in both hand-to-hand combat and a gun duel, his bitterness only grows.

Over time however, Ocelot begins to respect Snake's skills and reveals his changed allegiance as our protagonist slugs it out with Colonel Volgin in the later stages of the game. He chooses to let Snake live, feeling he is the superior soldier and a leader worth following. Ocelot goes on to join Big Boss fully in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, serving as a key commanding officer in the unit.

Considering Ocelot's decision to not kill Big Boss, along with his many other deeds, he's a character who drastically affected the franchise's direction. As a driving force behind many of the narrative's twists and turns, he turns into a master manipulator, triple-crossing everyone he meets and eventually becoming an agent of The Patriots. By the time Metal Gear Solid 4 came about, it was hard to tell whose side he was really on.
