10 Times Video Games Sucked On Purpose

2. Dark Souls: All Of Blighttown

The Riddler
FromSoftware

Dark Souls is already an immensely difficult game in its own right and it's this core of the design that has cultivated such a gargantuan fanbase. The fantastical horror Miyazaki and FromSoftware created hangs over the franchise's landscape from start to finish, making for a foreboding challenge.

There is many a challenge awaiting those who tackle the franchise, but at points, it overwhelms the player with more than just tough enemy encounters and difficult traversal. Nowhere is this more evident than with Blighttown, perhaps the most claustrophobic and horrific location in the original game.

Around a third of the way in, you're tasked with venturing underground to ring one of two bells, bringing you to the cursed area. From the moment you enter, it's extremely intimidating, barely lit by light flames and lamps. It's all too easy to get lost or blunder off one of the many ledges on your descent.

Enemies leap out from the shadows and the risk of poison and toxic attacks from foes always keeps the player on edge. Even the game itself is working against you here, dipping its framerate when working your way through. If Blighttown is a bleak and harrowing ordeal, then that same hell was successfully translated onto the player.
