Undertale is a game chock full of meta jokes that break the fourth wall. It's incredibly self-aware and conscious of a player's impact, meaning developer Toby Fox tried to be prepared for your every move, at every opportunity.
And yes, this also includes more mundane and seemingly irrelevant parts, such as naming your character.
During the intro, when Flowey asks you to give him your name, if you've played the game before and know the story, you might try to input some of the main characters' names, just to see what happens.
That's when you'll be surprised to discover this comes with additional features you wouldn't otherwise see.
Inputting story relevant and joke names as your own will not only make Flowey comment on them with custom responses, but in some instances, it will trigger additional effects.
For example, naming yourself Frisk will activate a secret Hard Mode, and using the name Gaster will cause your game to crash.
