Hideo Kojima and "out of place" go together like PB and J, but the unhinged opening to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots definitely tested his fanbase's tolerance for weirdness.
The game begins with one of several randomly selected live-action videos, ranging from commercials for Private Military Companies (PMC), to cooking shows, nanomachine workout infomercials, and so on.
But by far the most widely remembered of them all? A talk show called Celebrity Moralist, where Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter appears as a fictionalised, eyepatch-clad version of himself, while the host is played by Lee Meriwether, who portrays Big Mama/Eva in the game.
These clips continue to baffle fans to this very day, and while they're evidently intended to flesh out the world of the Metal Gear universe by showing how PMCs, nanotech, and war have become part of everyday life, they come as a huge shock to players first expecting to see Solid Snake running around.
