10 Triple-A Video Games You Just Gave Up On
7. Bravely Default
Bravely Default. What a self-aware name for a completely generic JRPG - like Square Enix thought, “this is going to be so plain, so vanilla, that we’re going to lean into it. REALLY lean into it. We’re not even going to pretend - let’s be brave about how default this game is”.
Or, that’s how I imagined it happened.
This 3DS game has a lot of fans, and to its credit, it does have some unique ideas, such as the “defaulting system” which allows you to miss a turn in exchange for accumulating energy in battle, and its stylish presentation which still looks quite impressive today, given the hardware it’s running on.
However, as you reach the “end”, inexcusably, the game throws a spanner into the works, and without spoiling some... well, honestly, pretty contrived plot points, you’re thrown back to the very beginning of the game to play through it all over again. And if that’s not bad enough, you can expect to play through it for a third and even a fourth time in order to truly complete the game.
Needless to say, many individuals found the nerve of the writers to be the only “brave” aspect here.
