10 Truly Awful Video Game Movies Sonic Might Be Worse Than
3. Wing Commander
It features Hercule Poirot as a space captain, which you’d think would be enough to save the movie, but alas not.
Many of these most terrible movies suffer from not winking at the fact that, as video game flicks, they’re almost predestined to be terrible. Detective Pikachu might break that pattern, Sonic almost certainly won’t, and Wing Commander definitely didn’t.
Directed by Chris Roberts who originally designed the game, any levity was quickly squashed, and it’s a shame as the movie could’ve easily benefited from it.
Matthew Lillard is left a little stranded by the strange tone, and while Freddy Prinze Jnr tries his best, it’s ultimately in vain.
The gameplay was revolutionary for its time, with one of the first epic storylines in gaming and never before seen combat. This story was found severely wanting when translated to the big screen though, where audiences expect a little more polish.
The film at least has its own special place in history; it was one of only three movies showing the trailer for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and in the pre social media days meant people bought tickets, watched the trailer, then promptly walked out. They didn’t miss much.
