3. Killer Kong
To its credit, this cover did at least make me howl with uncontrollable laughter the first time I saw it, if only for the unconvincing, sub-kindgarten drawing of an ape that adorns it. The juxtaposition and tone of the cover is all wrong; to start, for a game with the word "killer" in it, this box art feels oddly innocuous, and one might even say, playful. Even if we try to ignore the inoffensively quaint background colour, the expression on the ape's face better says "I scoffed the last bag of Doritos" than it does "I'm going to rip you apart limb from limb". How can this cover put anyone in the mood for some murder and mayhem? That said, it does instantly invite curiosity over how the ape looks in the actual game itself. Unfortunately - but not unexpectedly - it doesn't even begin to live up to that cheeky hype:
