With 2014's Wolfenstein: The New Order and this year's Doom, the classic first-person shooter renaissance is officially in full-swing. And with two years off to refine the superb, visceral shooting found in the original Wolfenstein reboot, developer Machine Games might just be ready to unleash a sequel later this year.

After announcing Fallout 4, Dishonored 2 and Doom at last year's E3, many thought that Bethesda would have nothing left to to reveal come this June. However, the publisher announced late last year that they'd be appearing at the 2016 event, and with all of those aforementioned games already priming for release, it makes sense that Wolfenstein would be the ace up the sleeve this year.

Whether Bethesda actually chooses to release the game in this way is a different story, however. While the publisher doesn't have anything set it stone once it launches Doom in May, it still has plenty of games in development that could serve as its big fall release.

However, considering how rare it is for Bethesda to hold E3 conferences, you've got to assume that they have a couple of surprises in store - and an out-of-nowhere release for Wolfenstein might just be one of them.
