10 Under-Appreciated Westerns To Watch While You Wait For Red Dead Redemption 2

1. El Dorado

Westworld Cowboy Ed Harris
Monogram Pictures

It wouldn't be a Western list without an entry from The Duke. Admittedly John Wayne's back catalogue can be a bit hit or miss where for every John Ford movie that is good, you've got some duffers. Thankfully Howard Hawks' trilogy of sheriff films are very good and in my personal opinion, El Dorado is the best of the trilogy.

See, Wayne had technically made this movie before with the better known 'Rio Bravo' which saw John and drunken deputy Dean Martin (a stretch of a role) team with young gun-slinger Ricky Nelson to defend their town from an evil ranch gang. El Dorado sees John play the gun for hire now assisting the sheriff (Robert Mitchum) defending the town with the assistance of a young man with vengeance on his mind (James Caan).

See the difference? It's that Hawks has now brought in actors to play the roles that singers had previously, thus making for a far better film.

El Dorado is almost the perfect Western of this era to slip into. The lines between good and evil are there for everyone to see but it's carried off with a good slice of levity which is always welcome.

Caan's Mississippi for example proves to be a worthy ally but an absolutely terrible shot, a problem that becomes rectified with a sawn-off shotgun. Ed Asner (from 'UP' and the criminally under looked Freakazoid) is our antagonist now and everything just seems to flow much more smoothly throughout held together by Wayne and Mitchums' performances and Hawk's expert direction.
