10 Under-Appreciated Westerns To Watch While You Wait For Red Dead Redemption 2

2. The Professionals

Westworld Cowboy Ed Harris
MGM

Rancher J.W. Grant wants only one thing more than extra initials in his name, his kidnapped wife (who admittedly is the stunning Claudia Cardinale) back from the clutches of Mexican bandito Jesus Raza (played by erm...Jack Palance in a dodgy 'stache). To do this he's sought out four of the best men:

Henry Fardan (Lee Marvin) - Weapons Specialist. Bill Dolworth (Burt Lancaster) - Demolitions Expert. Hans Ehrengard (Robert Ryan) - Horse Wrangler. Jake Sharp (Woody Strode) - Scout and deadly with a bow and arrow. Together these men are The Professionals and wait a minute! It's the A-Team of the Wild West!

Yup, Richard Brook's 1966 film bears a lot of similarities between this and it's fondly remembered 1980's counterpart, chief among them is its attitude for all out action. Rarely letting up for a breath the ensemble cast shines in each of their roles.

Marvin displays his cool demeanor throughout but it's Lancaster's Dolworth, essentially a prototype for the Face role with his wry quips that steal the show on this fun ride. Showdowns, explosions, revelations, betrayals, everything you'd want from this fast paced Western is on display and one viewing will hopefully explain why I often recommend this film to those looking for a Western.
