10 Underhyped Video Games That Blew Everyone Away
1. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
The Non-Hype
Back when PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was released into early access in March 2017, there wasn't much expectation for it to be anything more than another me-too multiplayer shooter to add to the long list - and one that would probably never actually slink out of early access.
The Big Reaction
Shortly after hitting early access, however, PUBG became a stonking hit, with a soaring concurrent player count on Steam which eventually outpaced even the phenomenally popular Dota 2.
PUBG surpassed 3 million concurrent players by the end of 2017, at which point it exited early access. By March 2018, the game has sold an astonishing 40 million copies worldwide in addition to scoring strong critical acclaim.
PUBG's true legacy, however, lies in popularising the Battle Royale genre, which has seen a slew of inferior imitators - and a few worthy successors - attempt to cash-in on the trend.
For a game that basically came out of nowhere to the casual observer, its influence on the industry over the last three years is nothing short of staggering.
