10 Underplayed Races You Should Try In Dungeons And Dragons

4. Tortle

Loxodon D&D
Wizards of the Coast

Born on sandy coastlines, Tortles become nomad survivalists as soon as they can walk. A peaceful and thoughtful race that resembles a humanoid tortoise, they often build good relationships with the other races. Their eagerness to explore the world and experience its wonders make them natural adventurers.

Tortles have a +2 in strength and +1 to wisdom, allowing them to shine as both fighters and spell casters. If hand-to-hand combat is of use to you, Tortles also have claws. They can use these to inflict increased damage in unarmed combat.

Their most unique feature, however, is the use of their shell. Because they have a large cumbersome piece of keratin on their back, they cannot wear armour. However, they do have a natural Armour Class of 17 at all times. This is of great use to casters but may limit other classes. There is another upside to this, however. As an action, you can retreat into your shell, increasing your Armor Class by +4. This will also give you a bonus on strength and constitution saving throws. You can’t move, you're prone and you will get disadvantage on dexterity saves. But you basically become a tank. You can always take a bonus action to emerge from your shell again, when the danger passes. This ability could save any adventurer's life.
