9. Virtua Fighter Pioneered 3D Fighting Before Tekken

The very first fighting game to make use of 3D models, Virtua Fighter left the 2D space behind long before the likes of Tekken gained popularity for doing the same thing. Wanting to prove just how revolutionary it was, everything about the game was set up to distinguish its new focus and set it apart from other titles in the genre, right down to its future-focused name.

Unfortunately, despite its pioneering of inventive graphics at the time, the series didn't quite have the gameplay prowess or the personality to attract fans of the more popular fighting franchises.

Street Fighter was still dominating the arcades and was where self-proclaimed 'serious' fighting game fans were going, while Mortal Kombat was gaining traction for its sheer brutality and over-the-top gore.

Still, Virtua Fighter was an enjoyable fighting game in its own right, and offered players a taste of the future long before its competitors would follow suit.
