10 Underrated Video Games That Need Sequels

8. Virtua Fighter 5

Alpha Protocol
Sega

Virtua Fighter revolutionized the fighting game genre but the last entry, Virtua Fighter 5, released all the way back in 2006.

From a technical standpoint, the game had smoother animation and was the first in the series to feature online play and make the jump to HD.

Another underrated aspect was its dedication to the technical aspects of fighting. The control scheme was simple yet difficult to master. Players couldn't just spam moves but had to counter their opponent's attacks. While other games were flashy, Virtua Fighter 5 incorporated motion capture to recreate real martial arts moves. To encourage a more 'moral' style of play, the Clash System was introduced where players could cancel out opponent's attacks. It was a truly unique fighter.

Sadly, while Virtua Fighter was respected among the fighting game community, it was never as popular as titles like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. This is probably why the series never continued since.

The series does kinda live on thought. Several characters from the series appeared as guest fighters in 2012's Dead or Alive 5. Around the same time, revisions of Virtua Fighter 5 were playable in the Yakuza games. Finally, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown was released in 2020. The game featured updated mechanics and new graphics.
