10 Underrated Video Games That Need Sequels

3. Sonic Adventure 2

1998's Sonic Adventure impressed critics with its graphics and multiple playable characters. Three years later, a sequel was released and served as the swan song for the Sega Dreamcast.

Sonic Adventure 2 featured speed, mech and exploration stages. It had two campaigns to choose from; namely the Hero and Dark stories. The former included Sonic, Tails and Knuckles while the latter had Dr. Robotnik and introduced Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat.

Improving everything about Sonic Adventure, it kept the best gameplay styles while ditching the ones that didn't work like Big the Cat's fishing levels. The hub world was abandoned and because of this, Adventure 2 was a non-stop rollercoaster. The game perfectly translated Sonic's gameplay into the 3D plane while introducing new mechanics such as rail grinding. Even though the title was a success, the transition to third party consoles led to a change in the series' direction. This was done through the release of 2003's Sonic Heroes which abandoned the Adventure gameplay.

Despite this, the legacy of Sonic Adventure 2 cannot be understated. For fans of the series, it would be the last time Sonic was on top. The first level, entitled City Escape, featured the hedgehog being chased by the government through the streets of San Francisco. It has since become an iconic moment in the franchise and was even payed homage by the 2020 film.
