Is Dark Souls a horror game? I think of it like a dark fantasy myself, but there's certainly enough in the lore and creature design that could qualify it as horror.

This is never more evident than when you meet the Mimics. Mimics have been in games for years. Creatures that either look like or live inside the chests you find equipment and treasure in, they burst out when you approach and try to eat you.

It's already a horrifying experience but Dark Souls takes it to extremes by having the Mimics be body-horror creatures with gangling limbs and lolling tongues all falling out of a chest lined with razor-sharp teeth. And that's without mentioning that chilling laugh.

A helm found later in the game gives players the same head and has the following item description:

"Monster head resembling a treasure chest. Once an ancient god, it is said this is the symbol of shame imposed on a long lost clan, exiled for the sin of avarice."

You realise these creatures were once men, now cursed to this horrifying existence by their greed.

And then you open the next treasure chest.

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
