2. Licker Love - Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 introduced many elements that would go on to become staples of the franchise, among them the Lickers; eyeless, skinless predators with an affinity for scaring the living daylights out of you. While these buggers are always an unwelcome sight, the first encounter in the halls of the Raccoon Police Department is a particularly memorable scene. It begins with, again, a seemingly empty hallway (never trust those). As Leon/Claire walk through, you hear a faint dripping sound. Of course, this turns out to be blood dripping from the ceiling and forming a nice little pool on the floor. A cutscene activates, as Leon/Claire look up to see the source in the form of a Licker. It opens its mouth and a long, slimy tongue slithers out of its mouth. I've used the word classic a lot at this point, but that is only because this franchise has so many classic moments, this being one of them. Everyone who has played
Resident Evil 2 remembers this scene; it's just classic Resident Evil. The scene has become so etched in the minds of the fans that even the 2002 Paul W.S. Anderson film copied this scene directly.
Resident Evil 2 is chock-full of memorable scenes, and this is definitely one of the best. It's a great set up with a great pay off, plain and simple. A classic scare in a classic game.
