5. Everyone - L.A. Noire
There is absolutely no point denying the huge leaps in cinematic detail that Rockstar's L.A. Noire made last year; the quality of the facial animation, achieved through a landmark motion capture technique, allowed for a stunning level of immersion during the game's countless dialogue-based scenes. However, it's unfortunate that this didn't transpire through to the rest of the character's likeness, though, because the end result feels more like a human head stuck higgledy-piggledy onto a robot's body. The movement animations are incredibly stiff, particularly during action, and therefore it's clear that all the development time was devoted primarily to the amazing facial visuals, while Rockstar just coasted on the rest of the body. It creates an odd feeling in the viewer, because we can marvel at this stunning new mo-cap technology, but at the same time it feels a little wasted when so little care has been taken with everything else. The result is an eerie feeling that what we're seeing is a real human, but at the same time, completely not.
