10 Unintentionally Hilarious 90s Horror Video Games
2. House Of The Dead 2 (1998)
Originally developed as an on-rails light gun shooter for Sega's ill-fated DreamCast console, 1998's House of the Dead 2 and its subsequent typing-tutor spin-off has gone down in history as perhaps the funniest horror shooter ever to be created. While the minute-to-minute gameplay present in this title is often scary enough, the whole experience is dramatically let down by the overwhelmingly terrible voice acting on offer. Bill Belichick or Ben Stein could probably deliver more convincing line reads while asleep—its that bad.
Though the gameplay is, on the whole, pretty good, this game loses all credibility once the first character utters their first line, which is about five seconds into the first level. Worse still is the downright hilarious Typing of the Dead, which was an odd take on the genre intended to help players brush up on their keyboarding abilities. In this version, each character now has a Sega DreamCast with a keyboard strapped to their backs, and it's unabashedly funny.
It may have genuinely helped someone to learn how to type—and the original title may actually have scared someone at some point—but House of the Dead 2 and its weird spin-off are way too funny to ever take seriously now.
