10 Unmissable Single Player Gaming Experiences
5. Portal (2007)
Every once in a while a game seems to come from nowhere and catch everyone completely by surprise; Portal is one such game. Originally released as part of Valve’s ‘Orange Box’ collection, that the majority purchased solely to play Half-Life 2 and its additional episodes, this puzzle-platformer has deservedly gathered a large fan base over the years.
Early on in proceedings the player is provided with a handheld device that can create up to two portals on any flat surface, entering one allowing them to exit the other. Using this device the player has to solve increasingly complex puzzles to progress through a series of interconnecting rooms.
There has hardly been a shortage of entries into the puzzle genre over the last twenty years, but Portal stands head and shoulders above all of them. From such a seemingly simple concept, the developers created the cleverest set of puzzles the genre has ever seen, each and every one of which is extremely satisfying to solve. On top of this Portal is one of very few games that can be described as genuinely funny, and in your AI guide GLaDOS, it also features one of the most memorable characters in the history of gaming.
Just remember that the cake is a lie...
