Wolfenstein: The New Order is a game that many want to believe in, but given the recent track record of the franchise, it's hard to get too hyped about it. 2001's Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a magnificent, atmospheric reboot that strangely didn't give birth to a proper sequel, while 2009's subsequent reboot, simply titled Wolfenstein, was a disappointing mess that didn't harness its full potential. The latest attempt at reshuffling the deck certainly has a promising alternate reality narrative and doesn't seem to be taking itself too seriously, but after so many curiously failed attempts to get a consistent franchise going, shouldn't that really be taken as a sign of some kind? Early journalistic access to the game has resulted in mixed impressions, and though the game certainly looks fun, there's absolutely no necessity for its release, and most gamers would probably have happily continued on without its existence. Fingers crossed that this one ends up being a wild card and completely confounds our expectations, delivering one of the best games in the series.
