Back in 2007, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. won over critics for its gameplay, combat AI, and focus on atmosphere. When two follow-ups were released back-to-back, it seemed this Cherbnobyl-based FPS was set to be the next big thing.

But when the following instalment was cancelled in 2012, the survival horror series seemingly vanished.

After a decade in dormancy, a full gameplay promo of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was suddenly unveiled at E3 2021. Since the series had went off the grid for so long, it would've been easy for S.TA.L.K.E.R.'s return to be marred by a more current title. Thankfully, this footage reassured everything that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was back in a big way.

Although the graphics are what you expect, it's the subtle touches that make all the difference. The way the environments are laced with fog, smoke, or dust that lace amplify the depressing setting better than if everything looked crispy and sharp.

This goes to show how the developers didn't work on S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2's visuals just to impress the player. Instead, they worked on these elements to immerse the player and ensure they felt the same level of hopelessness as the characters.

It may have taken a long time for S.T.A.L.K.E.R to return, but it's great to see them back and looking this good.
