Despite Diablo's influence on the dungeon crawler genre, the games themselves have never focused much on graphics.

But according to Blizzard, that's all going to change with Diablo 4. (Which is great, since those guys need a win after how Diablo: Immortal turned out.)

Rather than rendering everything to modern standards, Diablo 4's head designer, John Mueller, ensured the design for the characters and environments give off their own personality. By combining Diablo 2's gritty designs and Diablo 3's handpainted visuals, Mueller hopes "to find the sweet spot between the two."

In an interview with Eurogamer, Muller also stated, "We're not trying to make things look like photographs. We're trying to make things look painterly." Because of the franchise's supernatural elements, Muller's decision to give the game a more mythological design sounds perfect.

And that's not including the gameplay itself. The way the shadows and the weather change how the environment looks is hypnotic. The attention to detail on every facial expression is breathtaking. Watching crimson blood streak across the screen as you lay waste to your enemies is glorious (and disgusting).

Even if you've never played the series, the trailer for Diablo 4 is sure to draw you in.
