This June, Devolver Digital presented several upcoming projects they are working on. Even though this promotion showcased games with magnificent graphics like Anger Foot and Skate Story, there's no question The Plucky Squire stole the show.

Although the visuals doesn't look impressive at first, that's to deliberately mislead the viewer. The trailer opens with our hero, a young knight called Jot, living in a colourful children's book. Because of the cutesy, flat design, The Plucky Squire comes across as a homage to Newground Flash games.

But as Jot makes his way to the edge of the book, he breaks into the real world, causing the layout (and himself) to become three-dimensional.

There's plenty of games that juggle 2D and 3D level designs, but The Plucky Squire stands out since it's made such an effort to make both styles look dramatically different.

Rather than using both aesthetics as a novelty, the player will need to keep flipping between dimensions to defeat enemies, access certain areas, and complete puzzles. So, the two design styles aren't just a gimmick, but an incremental part of the gameplay.

Because The Plucky Squire will be available on all mainstream consoles next year, there's no reason not to check it out.
