3. Marvel’s The Avengers
If ever a game missed its window, this is it. Obviously, people still love the Avengers, but with the MCU moving to a new era, the timing for this isn’t ideal. It includes five of the six OG Avengers, but all demonstrate poor timing.
Black Widow and Iron Man are both dead now, although admittedly Black Widow is getting a solo prequel in the meantime. Hulk is very much pre Professor Hulk, while Thor is pre Ragnarok, ie pre any MCU fans caring.
Captain America time traveled to a different timeline and came back an old man, while Hawkeye had a major role in Endgame and is getting a spin off show, but has been replaced by Kamala Khan.
These characters obviously predate the MCU and Insomniac’s Spider-Man was a critical and commercial hit with no links to Tom Holland, so bad timing with the MCU needn’t be a death knell.
There’s more than just Square Enix’s failure to fully cash in on the MCU hype though. The character models - especially the blocky Captain America - have been roundly mocked, and the gameplay has a distinct ‘good but not great’ look to it.
This already smells like a missed opportunity.
