9. First Pyramid Head Encounter - Silent Hill 2
What can you say about Silent Hill that hasn't been said before? It's very dark, very scary...but this scene defines the true psychological aim of the game: you hear the noises, so as a curious human being, you can't resist the urge to investigate (you have to if you want to keep going ), and what do you find? The monstrous Pyramid Head (the epitome of all freaky monsters in Japanese gaming) doing pretty weird things to some mannequins. What's the creepy part of this? The fact that (and it doesn't matter what I've said before) IT'S NOT DOING ANYTHING TO THEM. Apart from contortionism and a few awkward positions, there is nothing happening. You have been tricked by the game to see what you wanted to see, and believe what you wanted to believe, a notion that will follow you through the rest of the game, until the final revelation - remember that part? When you recall that your wife didn't die by natural causes? Realising that, and seeing this scene after that, is just hard to swallow.
