10 Utterly Terrifying Video Games You Really Can't Handle
7. Detention
Developed by Taiwanese team Red Candle Games, Detention is a 2D point-and-click style horror set in a school in 1960s Taiwan during a period known as the White Terror.
Presented in a strikingly moody and macabre art style, the game sees players switch between students Wei and Ray who find themselves alone in their school during a typhoon. Following a grizzly rug-pull moment that we won't spoil here, the majority of the game plays out like a typical point-and-click adventure as you explore the school in search of various items.
Of course, you're not alone within the school walls. Shadowy creatures known as the "lingered" can be found haunting the corridors. To avoid detection, the game deploys a mechanic that lets the character hold their breath - just be sure not to run out too soon.
Although the 2D aesthetic might seem limiting to the horror, skin-crawling sound design - especially the eerie cries of the lingered - ensures that edging your way down a corridor towards the source of the noise is as suspenseful as possible.
Moreover, like all the genre greats, the real source of Detention's horror is rooted deeper than physical manifestation of the spirits you'll encounter.
