Although the idea of a tabletop-style card management game may sound like the furthest thing from a deeply disturbing horror, the aptly named Cultist Simulator manages to achieve this superlatively.

Requiring a lot of trial and error at first in order to figure out what's possible, players will begin with only a handful of basic cards needed to manage their work and funds. Quickly, though, players will have the chance to investigating clues that point them to the occult. And as the available cards begin to multiply while an eldritch mystery gradually reveals itself, it's not too hard to become completely lost in the world that appears before you.

Continuing to descend further into the murky depths of the occult, your character can become afflicted, adversaries can stalk you, mysterious strangers can tell you rumours that lead to new discoveries, and you can have Lovecraftian nightmares. All of which must be managed to maintain enough funds and health to survive.

While it may not look like a terrifying horror game on the surface, Cultist Simulator gradually seeps under your skin in the best way possible, making it just as effective as any other title on this list.
