10 Video Game Betrayals Nobody Saw Coming

9. Pavel - Metro: Last Light

Metro: Last Light
Deep Silver

You first meet Pavel in the depths of the Reich in Metro: Last Light, coming across the prisoner and immediately watching as his friend gets executed before his very eyes. He promises to answer his tormentor's interrogation questions as long as your character, Artyom, isn't in the room. That's the first sign that he's probably hiding something, but you don't really question it at the time because, well, you've got a gun pointed to your head.

Either way, you both escape and seemingly set out with the same goals, and he even leads you through the dangers of the underground. After completing a few missions together you head for a celebratory drink. However, Pavel spikes your cup and knocks you unconscious, revealing himself to be a high-ranking undercover member of the Red Line the whole time.

You end up in the reverse situation of how you found him, with Artyom being held hostage by the man he thought was his friend. Fortunately it ends with the exact reverse of that first meeting as well, with Pavel being overpowered at knife point.
