10 Video Game Betrayals Nobody Saw Coming

7. Lucy - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Though the cast of Assassin's Creed found outside of the Animus is usually pretty throwaway, in the first few games there were a couple of compelling characters which kept this part of the story compelling. Perhaps the most important was Lucy, who essentially became Desmond (and the player's) right-hand partner in taking down the Templars. Which made it all the more shocking when she was killed off in Brotherhood.

However that game also teased that Lucy may have been an undercover agent the whole time, and actually working for the modern day Templars. Her death was still a shock, but this implied that at least she maybe had it coming.

The betrayal hit deep, but the worst part about it was how slowly it was revealed, with players not finding out until the next game's DLC just whose side Lucy was actually on. It ended up being similar to the "will they, won't they?" found in a sitcom like Friends, but with Templars and Assassin's swapped out for Ross and Rachel.
