10 Video Game Boss Battles That Left Us Disappointed

2. Necron €“ Final Fantasy IX

After forty some hours of levelling, exploring, hunting for chocographs, mastering synthesis, collecting Zodiac coins and probably replaying that one scene in Alexandria where Zidane and Blank mock-duel in a test of your quicktime reaction skills in the hope of impressing Queen Brahne, what's one of the most under-appreciated gems in the Final Fantasy franchise ends with something of a whimper where it should be a bang. Namely Necron €“ a being conjured out of Kuja's fear, hate and lust for destruction... right. Why Squaresoft (as they still were then... before the dark days) thought it would be a good idea to bring in an almighty Deus Ex entity into the fray at the very last minute of the game, we'll never know. Necron is barely explained, and seems thrown in just to give the player one last challenge. That, Necron unquestionably brings given the difficulty you have in levelling your characters beyond level 70 in Final Fantasy IX. Challange or no, Necron pretty much spits in the face of the game's story climax, stealing Kuja's thunder when it was very much his moment. Arguably one of the most compelling but oft overlooked villains in the Final Fantasy franchise, Kuja had everything going for him in terms of villainy; a robot-like black mage producing factory, a smug smile, flowing silvery hair and a seriously androgynous fashion sense. This should have been his moment, instead a towering smurf in the shape of an angel inexplicably arrives and decides to mess up your existence because, hey, humans are bad, ok? Poor show, Square.

He owns four different editions of A Song of Ice and Fire and no, it isn't overkill. He's left the neon haze of Tokyo and Seoul for the more sedate streets of Bournemouth.
