10 Video Game Bosses Beaten By Their Own Arenas

6. Nintetails (Ōkami)

The dark kitsune Ninetails is perhaps the most memorable masterpiece amongst Ōkami's oeuvre of spectacular sumi-e brushstrokes, a multi-stage epic which literally tests who's quickest on the draw. But for the dramatic setting Oni Island's biggest baddie calls home, Amaterasu would have no chance.

Thoughout the fight, Nintetails will periodically raise its shichishitō-like branched sword Ninestrike in preparation of a devastating attack. It's at this point our god-in-wolf's-clothing must divert the storm rippling around the arena in the direction of her adversary's conductive blade, which, acting as a lightning rod, splits Nintetails into nine scurrying spirits.

Even when the boss has been battered into a parlous position, it continues to raise the glaive - with similarly shocking result. Just as you shouldn't try to play golf in a thunderstorm, nor should you battle a sun deity during an electrical downpour either.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
