it goes almost without saying that the highest difficulty level in fighting games are pretty much always devilishly tricky to actually win in.

This is especially true for the Mortal Kombat series, which coined the term "MK Walkers" to describe the crazy challenging top difficulty the series' CPU possessed. In order to make battles more troublesome, the AI's reaction time is simply improved by incredible amounts - meaning they can do basically perfect blocks and attacks, since the speed they can realise what to do is almost infinitely faster.

So, how did players combat the cruelty of Kombat? Well, in most games you had to learn to outsmart and outmanoeuvre your enemy except Mortal Kombat 3.

In the third instalment, your enemy had an indecipherable weakness: uppercuts. Thus, you can either painstakingly develop tactics by being brutalised by various robots, or instead just uppercut them into oblivion. It's a tactic that would be slated if you used it against a human player, but it feels a little bit less cruel against a ruthless robo-opponent.

Even if you intend to do fight fair, there's only so long you can be trounced by a colourful AI before you snap and settle on repeatedly uppercutting their face.
