4. Lord Hawkwind - Wizardy 4

Long before the days of Elden Ring and its brethren there were still games out there which were difficult for the pure sake of being difficult. Older gamers will certainly think of the Wizardy series when asked about extremely difficult games of the ’80s and Wizardy 4: Return of Werdna is not only no different, it’s actually significantly more difficult than previous entries.

Speaking of previous entries, one neat aspect of the game was that gamers could send in their saved games from earlier entries and see their characters in Wizardry 4. Which is cool and all - but why, you might ask? Well, that’s because in 4 you play as the villain from 3 trying to regain his lost powers and climb out of the 10-level dungeon he was thrown into by the last trilogy’s heroes.

And if that wasn’t hard enough for you - take the final boss of the Temple of Cant - Lord Hawkwind. A self-insert ‘Gary Stue’ of one of the developers, Hawkwind - the elven ninja - is basically invincible and can one-shot you. Unless you have one of the lowest-strength enemies, a Dink. So, unless you mapped out the first four levels of the game on graph paper by hand to see the word “Dink” spelled out, you got here and died. No chance of victory. There’s a reason 4 isn’t often included in talks of remasters.
