Mount & Blade is an incredibly immersive role-playing game set in the fictional feudal world of Calradia. The game puts a lot of effort into making your life as a medieval lord as historically accurate as possible, and while this effort certainly pays off in many aspects of the game, there are obviously some parts of the Dark Ages that aren't really all that fun.

When creating your character at the start of the game, Mount & Blade will warn you that choosing a female character will make the game significantly harder for you, explaining that in medieval times, women did not have much social standing. What this means in terms of gameplay is that your female character will need more renown to gain status in the world. She won't be able to get a fief from her lord as easily as men, and some lords may even deny you the right to enter their castles.

This is obviously not the most optimal way to play the game, and it can make your experience with Mount & Blade downright miserable. On the other hand, once you're experienced enough, becoming a powerful Empress within a male-dominated world can make for a fun challenge.
