For all of the reasons to want to kill Sephiroth amid Final Fantasy VII's labyrinthine, even confusing plot, the real motivating factor comes relatively early on in the game, when the silver-haired villain stabs beloved character Aeris to death, to the pain and anguish of gamers all over the world (to the extent that some gamers used cheat discs to revive the character). From that moment, the desperation to plough through the game to get to Sephiroth was a feeling virtually unrivaled in any other game: he was in many senses the quintessential villain. The final boss fight in FFVII is far from a cakewalk, taking three different forms, each posing a fair level of difficulty unless you've been a dedicated player, and have a strong collection of Materia as well as having ensured to level up your Limit Breaks. Still, the feeling of satisfaction after finishing him off cannot be denied: we all did it for Aeris.
