10 Video Game Characters Fans OBSESSED Over (Commenter's Edition)
1. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider
Because video games have been around for decades, it's surprising how long it took before the industry pumped out a female sex symbol. Samus, Ms. Pac-Man, and Princess Peach were iconic female characters in the gaming world, but they were rarely sexualised. (Well, Ms. Pac-Man is a little, which is weird.)
As video games moved into the third dimension though, there was a clearer focus, not only on making characters more realistic, but more physically enticing.
Although Tekken, Virtua Fighter and Final Fantasy VII devised characters with more sex appeal, Tomb Raider's Lara Croft blew its competition out of the water.
Upon its launch, the Indiana Jones-inspired title was praised for its controls and gameplay, but let's not be coy. The main reason Tomb Raider became a global phenomenon was because of our heroine's busty appearance. (The developers claim Lara's chest size was a mistake, but we can safely assume that's not true.)
However, suggesting Lara Croft is only popular because of her physique is an oversimplification. No matter how sexy she may be, the character couldn't stand the test of time if the games weren't up to par.
Not only has the Tomb Raider franchise maintained its legacy for a quarter of a century, Lara has reinvented herself and evolved into a more complex character over the years, allowing her to become more popular than ever.
