It's fair to say that "Five Nights at Freddy's" was a breaking point in Scott Cawthon's career.

It put him on the map as the creator of one of the most popular horror games in recent years. But the funny thing is, Scott would've never made the game if it weren't for another breaking point in his life. More specifically, the breaking point of his patience, prompted by a flood of negative reviews and unfair criticism.

In 2013, Scott Cawthon was working on assets for a game called Chipper & Son's Lumber Co., a cutesy, kid-friendly game about a happy beaver helping out his fellow woodland critters. When the game came out, many reviewers criticized it for being too creepy-looking for kids to play. They specifically talked about the models of the animal characters having an unnatural appearance, like animatronics in a pizza parlor.

The critics caused Cawthon to snap, and he eventually decided to use the animatronic aesthetic to his advantage. He changed his leftover models for Chipper & Son's into Freddy and his band and went on to create his famous horror game.
