In the world of monsters, war, and magic where acclaimed RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set, rarely anybody gets a happy ending.

The most unfortunate soul who Geralt meets on his quest to find Ciri is that of Philip Strenger, better known as The Bloody Baron.

The self-appointed ruler of the war-torn lands of Velen, players first encounter him while following one of the leads on Ciri's location. But before he's willing to tell Geralt what he knows, the baron asks the witcher to find his missing wife and daughter.

However, diving deeper into his questline reveals a story full of heartbreak and tragedy involving guilt, loneliness, alcoholism, and heartbreak after heartbreak.

Though a deeply flawed character who's committed terrible actions, the baron isn't the monster some say he is. He's a victim of his own misfortune who desperately wants to try and make things right with his loved ones. This is the moral conflict at the heart of this quest line, which has made it the game's most memorable.

Despite his best intentions, however, the baron is unable to get the outcome he hoped for. Even he didn't deserve to go through everything that happened to him.
