Players of Silent Hill 2 were no doubt torn between liking Maria and protecting her with their lives, and being super suspicious of her. She's nice enough, but the fact that she looks incredibly similar to the player's dead wife, Mary, is nothing short of intensely sketchy.

But, as it turns out, Maria looks similar to Mary for a reason: she is Mary. Well, kind of.

As it appears that Maria is either another manifestation of James' guilt over his mistreatment - and eventual murder - of his wife, or possibly a literal reincarnation of Mary created by the supernatural powers of Silent Hill.

Either way, she unknowingly exists to remind James of his past sins, which is also shown by the way the town repeatedly kills her only to bring her back once more.

Because of this, your ending will either have Mary or Maria as the final boss in the game, turning then into a surreal Saw-trap style creature who can vomit moths at you.

Maria is such a secret villain that even she isn't aware of this - which is one of the saddest concepts ever.
