10 Video Game Characters You Didn't Take Seriously (Until They Killed You)

3. Yami (Okami)

Those who'd played through Earthworm Jim would have been laughing their stockings off when the true form of Yami, Okami's ultimate baddie, was revealed. The great oni which threatened to spread eternal darkness across all of Nippon, save for the efforts of one enterprising wolf goddess turns out to be... a fish in a bowl!?

This is identical to Bob, the last boss in Shiny's platform wriggler, who Jim promptly eats. So surely Amaterasu can just scoff up her fish supper in the same way, and let credits roll?

It's not that simple. Yami, unlike Bob, also comes with an impervious mechanical exo-skeleton, which, fortunately, happens to be weak to various combinations of Amaterasu's celestial brush techniques. That makes it a damn sight more demonic - though it's hard not to howl with laughter the first time a little goldfish pathetically rolls out the suit of armour.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
