10 Video Game Cliffhangers That Went NOWHERE
7. Dante's Inferno (2010)
Visceral Games' Dante's Inferno is the bombastic combination of classical literature and God of War-style gameplay you never knew you wanted. But, despite being an awesome guilty pleasure, there are a lot of flaws in this divine hack-and-slash adventure, like its frustrating cliffhanger ending.
After battling through the nine layers of Hell and killing Lucifer, Dante is carried out of the infernal abyss. He's taken to Purgatory, the location of the next part of the iconic Divine Comedy poem, where he removes the tapestry on his chest and tosses it aside, ready for the next step in his odyssey. But that tapestry suddenly turns into a slithery snake and skedaddles away, suggesting that Lucifer still lives.
Tragically, this ending could have gotten away with calling itself an open-ended conclusion had it finished there. But that wasn't the final note, as you're struck by three words that hit harder than Dante's scythe, "To be continued..." Oh boy, that hurts.
Since then, EA has closed Visceral Games' doors, putting an end to any idea of a sequel to this cult-classic. Sorry, Dante - no paradise for you.
