2. The Darkness II (2012)
The Darkness II comes complete with two endings. One provides a bittersweet yet firm conclusion to the story. However, the other finale, considered the true ending, is anything but, as it delivers a gut-punch cliffhanger with no potential for a follow-up in sight.
Throughout the game, you play as Jackie Estacado, a mafia hitman with the powers of The Darkness, on his mission to rescue the soul of his deceased love, Jenny. In a bout of good news, he does manage to do so, falling into Hell and releasing Jenny.
But don't get too happy, because it's not over yet.
It is then revealed that Jenny has become the host of The Angelus, the antithesis of Jackie's Darkness. Where does that leave him and their relationship? Well, Jackie is trapped in Hell, with his final moments in the game seeing him scream bloody murder as the body of his possessed girlfriend flies away.
Yes, it certainly gives a strong start to the third game, but don't hold your breath waiting for this franchise to return, or you'll end up looking quite blue.
