11 Video Game Consoles You Never Knew Existed

2. The Ceasefire (Sony/Nintendo)

Okay it wasn't actually called that - the SNES-CD was the name at the time - but this early collaboration between Nintendo and Sony from 1991 would've changed the face of the industry as it stands today had it gone ahead. The story has been covered previously over here, but it basically goes that Sony hardware engineer Ken Kutaragi (who you'll know know as the man who's delivered many a press conference in the years following) helped concoct this hybrid design of a system that could play both discs and cartridges. Following the unveiling of the machine there was reportedly a snafu with the two companies struggling to find middle ground when it came to how they would make a profit on a single system - Sony wanted disc-based sales and Nintendo that of cartridges. In the end the deal was scrapped even though it had just been announced, but Kutaragi refused to give up, instead charging forward with his vision of the Playstation brand to unprecedented success.
