10 Video Game Decisions You Immediately Regret Making

3. Kabuto Or Omanyte (Pokémon Red/Blue)

After spending the better part of their young adult lives and at least half a dozen AA batteries trawling through Mt. Moon's labyrinthine caverns, budding Pokémon trainers were presented with a rock-hard problem. Upon defeating a scientist nerd to clear Team Rocket out of the maze for the good, two odd shaped archaeological artifacts are left behind: the helix and dome fossils.

The player is forced to pick one there and then - they're so big they're blocking the exit - with absolutely no idea as to the benefit lugging a big stone in their backpack will bring. It transpires much, much later that a scientist situated on the remote island of Cinnabar has perfected the technology to bring these fossilised remains back to life, and he does so with zeal, oddly expressing no surprise that one happens to be in the possession of a ten year old kid.

The process is a success, and you get either Kabuto or Omanyte depending on a decision you made at about Level 10. Immediately upon seeing your daft revived shell/helmet, you wish you'd picked the other. The only way to get both is through an external trade; the other fossil is put on display in the Safari Zone. Curses!

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
