What's the next logical step after swapping your game engine and introducing a whole bunch of physics-based carnage to your last instalment?
Change the genre entirely, ditch all that and move onto something completely different. Because video games.
The reason comes from Ryu Ga Gotoku studio wanting to shake things up after so many instalments, but the reception from fans so far has been a resounding, "Sure... I guess??"
It seems most were more than happy with the Heat finishers and overblown object-flinging Yakuza is known for, and the in-game reason for Yakuza 7 being turn-based comes from new character Ichiban Karuga being a fan of Dragon Quest.
Time will tell whether such a drastic change can be pulled off, but Sega's Toshihiro Nagoshi has stated the team will go back to "traditional" gameplay if this new direction doesn't catch on.
