10 Video Game DLCs That Burned Their Fanbase

7. The Taken King - Destiny

Bungie's third expansion for their sci-fi looter-shooter Destiny, The Taken King above all else displayed the utter contempt that Bungie and Activision had for its own fanbase. For starters, the expansion was almost the same price as the base game, which soured the experience for a lot of players. The Taken King was admittedly huge, improving the game's story, mechanics and mission structure, but this had one massive drawback.

In restructuring the game in such a way, player who hadn't bought the exorbitantly priced DLC were locked out of already existing content, such as Nightfall missions and Daily and Weekly Heroic Strikes - further limited were bounties and playable match types. The developer had essentially punished loyal players for not forking out another $40 for an expansion to a game they had already sunk time and money into.

Even worse was the fact that some of The Taken King's content was only available to players who bought the $80 Collector's Edition of the expansion, which included the base game which they already had. Bungie's creative director Luke Smith defended the decision to further withhold such content in an absolute trainwreck of an interview with Eurogamer, where he essentially blamed players for being anxious about the price. It's truly toe-curling reading.
