10 Video Game DLCs That Burned Their Fanbase
5. Easy Fatalities - Mortal Kombat X
Speaking of fighting games, and Mortal Kombat in general, NetherRealm Studios spectacularly missed the point of their unique selling point when they released the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat X. Fatalities, a far cry from the moral panic generator they were in the early 1990s, have gradually morphed into an exercise in excess and silliness. Their impact is largely lost, but the complex and difficult button combination required to pull them off still makes them rewarding.
That is until NetherRealm introduced "Easy Fatalities", allowing players to immediately execute the gory finishers for a small price - 99 cents for 5 or $4.99 for 30. That's right, the one thing that still made the tired curtain calls special could now just be bought with real money on top of the game's original price tag. It utterly devalued what was left of fatalities and undermined a game with one of the most dedicated and kompetitive fanbases in gaming history.
It didn't help that Easy Fatalities had reportedly been requested to NetherRealm by a small subset of players who just wanted some casual fun, resulting in NetherRealm turning round and saying "here you go!" while rubbing their thumb and forefingers together.
